About LASCT

The Los Angeles Society for Coatings Technology (LASCT) is a voluntary, nonprofit trade association. Established May 4, 1924, it is the preeminent organization in the Southern California area representing more than 100 paint and coatings manufacturers, raw materials suppliers, distributors, educators and students.

An important LASCT objective is to provide technical education and professional development to its members and to the Southern California coatings industry through its monthly technical presentations, technical documents, job assistance and scholarships.

Proper Colorant Formulation to Improve Properties of Tinted Decorative Paints

There are many commercially available colorant systems used to tint POS and in-plant decorative paint bases. Most paint companies choose their colorant systems based on such factors as cost, yet never consider the impact the colorants will have on their tinted paints. However, these colorant systems have a significant detrimental impact on the performance properties of the paint bases they are used in. Properties such as surfactant leaching, blocking, scrub resistant, viscosity drop, stain resistance, corrosion resistance, dirt pick up, and many more. This results in significant use of resources in R&D as well as adding costs to the un-tinted paint bases.

In this presentation, we will show how colorants can be formulated to “improve” all the paint properties listed above when tinted into the paint base versus the un-tinted paint. This new system is also viscosity stable, has no syneresis, and eliminates mold growth in tint machines as well as painted exterior surfaces via use of technology from military and aerospace applications. This new colorant system can be used to match all commercially available colorant systems, so to allow for pour over the top of the older colorants and is cost neutral to older colorant system designs, and allows for reduction in raw material cost for paint bases.
